Chapter 18

Sandy wouldn’t allow me to move his hutch outside until he had something to watch his soaps on out there. And Jack would have a hissy fit if he had to spend another night with that ferret in the lounge, so I had to find a suitable TV.

After leaving Jade Holdings, I made my way to the high street, and called in at a shop called Screens, which if the window display was anything to go by, sold TVs of all shapes and sizes.

Business must have been slow because I’d no sooner walked through the door than two men made a beeline for me. The taller one came from my lefthand side, the other came from my right. It was clear that they were in a race to reach me first. It was the shorter one who won the race, leaving his colleague visibly annoyed.

“Welcome to Screens!” The triumphant man enthused. “My name is Ben. How can I help you today?”

“I need a TV.”

“We have plenty of those. Did you have anything in mind? 4K? QLED?”

I didn’t have the first idea what either of those was, but I didn’t say so. Instead, I said, “Nothing fancy. I just need something small.”

“How small?”

I held my hands about a foot apart.

“That’s really small. Are you sure?”

“Positive. And it will need to work out in the garden.”

“Like in a summer house?”

“Sort of, but much smaller.”

“I see.” I could tell by his expression that he was beginning to regret winning the race to serve me. “Our smaller TVs are over the other side of the store.”

I followed him over there.

“There’s quite a few to choose from.” He pointed to a shelf that contained a number of TVs.

“Don’t you have anything smaller?”

“I’m afraid not. Is there any reason it needs to be so small?”

“It’s a small summer house. Very small.” I looked again at the TVs on offer. “That one at the end might be okay.”

“Great.” His smile returned as he sensed a sale.

“Will it work out in the garden?”

“Do you have Wi-Fi in the house?”

“We do.”

“Then there shouldn’t be a problem.”

“What about power?”

“Don’t you have a power supply in the summerhouse?”

“No.”

His smile evaporated.

“The TV will need power to work. Maybe you could run an extension cord from the house?”

“I’d rather not.”

“In that case, you’re going to need a TV that takes rechargeable batteries, but I’m afraid we don’t stock those. There isn’t much call for them.”

“Do you have any idea where I might get one?”

“Sorry, no idea.”

It was obvious he’d lost all interest in me and was already eyeing a couple of other customers who had just walked into the store.

“Okay, I guess I’ll leave it.”

How could buying a TV for a ferret be so difficult?

Back at the office, Jules had some good news.

“I think I’ve found that McConnel guy.”

“Great stuff. What did you find out?”

“Like you said, he’s a racehorse owner. Very successful, by the look of it.” She handed me a few sheets of paper. “I printed these recent news articles about him.
